This study examines how selection of different datum features in the housing affects the geometric quality of electric-power speed reducer. Three datum strategies were analyzed, namely, using assembly features (locator pin-hole), using bearing bores, and a combination of both. Tolerance analysis was used to evaluate their impact on shaft orientation, inter-shaft distance, and inter-shaft parallelism. Results showed that selecting assembly features as datums, when part float was minimized, performed the best in controlling the shaft orientations. In contrast, using bearing bores as datums provided better control over inter-shaft distance and parallelism. Based on these findings, the study proposes guidelines for datum selection and also suggests an improved design to balance the three key characteristics effectively. © 2026 The Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers.
