The Effects of Ingredient Information UI Component Configurations in Cosmetic Mobile Applications on Cognitive Load

초록

Background Following the implementation of the full ingredient labeling system for cosmetics, mobile applications designed to support users’ understanding of cosmetic ingredient information have become increasingly prevalent. However, in actual mobile app environments, a large amount of information, such as ingredient names, risk levels, and functional purposes, is presented within a limited screen space. Against this background, the present study aims to empirically examine how user interface(UI) component configurations and user involvement levels influence cognitive load in cosmetic ingredient information apps and to provide design implications for information-intensive mobile services. Methods An experimental study was conducted in the context of mobile cosmetic ingredient information apps, using UI component type and number as the independent variables and intrinsic, extraneous, and germane cognitive load as dependent variables. A total of 204 participants experienced all ten UI component configurations using a within-subjects design. Repeated-measures multivariate analysis of variance(MANOVA) was employed to analyze differences in cognitive load according to UI component configurations and to examine interaction effects with user involvement levels. Results The type and configuration of UI components had significant effects on users’ cognitive load. Tag-based single-component structures produced the highest cognitive load across all three dimensions, whereas two-component combinations incorporating accordion, dropdown, and carousel structures showed relatively lower cognitive load, particularly in terms of information processing and semantic understanding. Overall, combined UI structures tended to facilitate more efficient information processing than single-component structures. These effects were more pronounced in the high- involvement group than in the low-involvement group, indicating that the impact of information structure varies according to users’ involvement levels. Conclusions The findings suggest that the cognitive efficiency of UI components is not consistently determined by existing design guidelines but may vary depending on the application context and information structure. Moreover, unlike the general trends reported in previous research, cognitive load differences associated with UI component type and number were more clearly observed among high- involvement users in this study.
