초록
In this essay I tried to analyze the letters of condolence and representations on Jeon-Taeil’s death in Korean Minjoo-nojo movement from 1970s to 1980s. In this essay firstly, I paid attention to the meaning of the death of Jeon-Taeil. His death was an event of opening the field of Minjoo-nojo movement in S. Korea. His burning himself to the death was a sublime gesture different from any other persons’ suicide in its historical meaning. His death was a symbolic manifestation of the increasing working population in industrial cities at that time. Owing to his death, we could see the workers who was invisible at that time as a significant social force. His death changed our perceptual landscape. In this respect of aesthetics, his death is a sublime event. Secondly, I defined the politics of Minjoo-nojo on its singular subjectivity and identified various sites of the politics of Minjoo-nojo after his death. The ritual sites of condolence was also the important sites of politics of Minjoo-nojo. I analyzed the letters of condolence by critical discourse analysis, and divided several sequences according to its representational characteristics.
