Virtual-Occlusion–Based Multi-Display Transition Design : An Experimental Study on Spatial Continuity

초록

As urban space becomes increasingly digitized and media technology advances, digital signage has proliferated in public and commercial spaces, and multi-screen configurations that link several displays into a single scene are becoming more common as well. In actual installation environments, however, architectural elements such as columns and walls, together with spatial constraints, leave physical gaps between screens that undermine visual continuity. This study proposes a virtual occlusion design to address this problem and examines the effects of gap ratio (10%, 30%, and 50% of the mean screen width) and of the presence or absence of virtual occlusion using a mixed-design ANOVA. Virtual occlusion had significant effects on perceived motion continuity, perception of virtual occlusion, and scene integration, whereas the between-subjects main effect on object identity was not significant. These findings provide baseline data for the design of visual continuity in multi-screen displays.
