초록

Park Sun-nyeo’s Orchid (1967) narrates memories of the colonial period against the backdrop of a women’s teachers’ college, which was established during the total mobilization era with the aim of training women to support the war effort. The female students secretly violate the official script for Korean female students prescribed by Japanese colonial education—that is, standardized speech and behavior patterns—and form an unofficial hidden transcript of the colonized. In particular, they reject the nationalization of gender and the roles assigned to women, such as reproduction, consumption control, and lifestyle improvement, and resist the mechanisms used to justify these roles, including emotional and bodily discipline and the inner-outer unity education. The narrative of Orchid overcomes the limitations of previous research—which found it difficult to apply the concept of the hidden transcript,a form of everyday resistance to the colonial period due to the lack of records in the realms of daily life and informal discourse—and demonstrates that retrospective literary memory can reveal the existence of the hidden tanscript.
