Echo-Mirroring-Based Embodied Mirror Interface Design for Pre-Departure Self-Regulation – Focusing on Entryways of Young Single-Person Households

초록

(Background and Purpose) With the spread of ICT and AI technologies, residential environments are becoming intelligent spaces that sense and respond to users' states. Existing smart mirrors and emotion-recognition AI have mainly developed around information provision, emotion detection, state measurement, and functional integration. However, the spatial and aesthetic conditions that enable users to recognize and self-regulate their emotional and expressive states in a non-judgmental manner remain insufficiently discussed. This issue is especially relevant to young adults living alone, who repeatedly check and adjust appearance, facial expression, posture, and emotional state before entering social situations. This study defines the entryway of single-person households occupied by young adults as a mediating space where self-monitoring and self-presentation adjustment occur during the transition from a private to a social state, and aims to derive design requirements for an echo-mirroring-based embodied mirror interface that supports pre-departure self-regulation. (Method) This study was conducted through theoretical review, derivation of analytical criteria, case selection and comparative analysis, and formulation of design requirements. Based on a literature review of entryway mediating spatiality, self-regulation and mirror environments, the limitations of smart mirrors and emotion-recognition AI, and the concepts of echo-mirroring and embodied mirror interfaces, eight analytical criteria were derived: self-regulation, echo-mirroring, embodiment, and interactivity in the functional-technical dimension; poetic-imaginal spatiality and formal restraint in the aesthetic-formal dimension; and privacy and user control, and suitability for entryway mediating spaces in the privacy-spatial dimension. Five mirror-interface cases were then selected and qualitatively analyzed according to operational purpose, input signals, feedback modes, user-control structures, and spatial application context. (Results) The analysis showed that existing mirror interfaces present partial possibilities in emotion recognition, routine support, self-reflection, affective response, and functional implementation. However, they do not sufficiently address the conditions of entryways in single-person households occupied by young adults, such as short dwell time, compressed circulation, adjacency to the outside, and pre-departure self-presentation adjustment. In particular, two common limitations were identified: the tendency to treat emotion as information to be detected, classified, and displayed rather than as a cue for non-judgmental self-interpretation, and insufficient privacy and user-control structures. Accordingly, this study derived eight final design requirements reflecting entryway application conditions across the functional-technical, aesthetic-formal, and privacy-spatial dimensions. (Conclusions) This study reinterprets the mirror-based interface not as a device for emotion analysis or information display, but as an entryway-specific mediating environment that non-judgmentally reflects users' emotional and expressive states to support self-awareness and self-regulation. Rather than excluding emotion-recognition technology, this study proposes a design direction that avoids judging users' states through emotion labels or scores and transforms body-based expressive signals into non-judgmental cues for self-interpretation. As an exploratory study based on literature review and case analysis, it does not extend to prototype implementation or user evaluation; nevertheless, it provides a foundational framework for future entryway mirror interfaces and intelligent residential environments for young single-person households.
