초록

This paper reads Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway (1925) through affect theory, drawing on Lauren Berlant’s Cruel Optimism and Sara Ahmed’s The Cultural Politics of Emotion. It examines how postwar London shaped by trauma, fatigue, and ambient anxiety, functions as an affective environment in which emotion and social rhythm sustain everyday survival. By situating affect within a broader political economy rather than a private psychological domain, the paper explores how Woolf’s depictions of atmosphere, rhythm, and proximity reveal the fragility and persistence of life in a landscape marked by war and pandemic. Berlant’s reading of A Room of One’s Own highlights lateral relations—oblique encounters that disrupt habitual sensory patterns while opening new affective connections. Building on this insight, the paper argues that Clarissa’s vulnerability and intuitionist disposition, though not overtly political, articulate an aesthetic of coexistence grounded in relational continuity and affective responsiveness.
