Knockless: Shape-Changing Door Handle for Occupant Territorial Privacy Regulation

Doors regulate territorial boundaries, but lack effective occupancy communication, leading to unwanted interruptions and social tension. Explicit status signaling appears to solve this, but can worsen social relationships or overly expose privacy. We present Knockless, a shape-changing door handle that communicates nuanced occupancy status through physical transformation. Our system employs motor-driven and pneumatic mechanisms to create four states: away (handle retraction), welcome (oscillatory movements), and two intermediate indicators; focus and timer (silicone chamber patterns). This approach enables visitors to assess room availability while preserving occupant boundaries, demonstrating how morphological cues support territorial communication in shared spaces. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).
