A Study on the Development of a Checklist for the Construction and Improvement of Barrier-Free Environments in Exhibition Spaces

초록

After the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, the attendance rate for cultural and artistic events has recovered, andexhibition spaces have become one of the most preferred venues in the cultural sector. At the same time, society has entereda super-aged era, accompanied by an increase in both the elderly population and people with acquired disabilities. However, agap in accessibility between culturally disadvantaged groups and general cultural consumers still remains, indicating thatopportunities for cultural participation among the disadvantaged are limited. Therefore, improving accessibility for older adults andpersons with disabilities is essential to expand participation in leisure and cultural activities. This study proposes a checklist thatcomprehensively evaluates the architectural and exhibition environments of exhibition spaces in order to enhance accessibility. To this end, relevant concepts and criteria were established through theoretical review, and based on this, an initial checklistwas developed. The checklist was then applied to selected exhibition spaces to conduct a field survey, and the findings werereflected in the development of a final checklist. The results of the survey showed that the architectural environment generallymet the evaluation standards, but certain elements hindered visitor convenience. In contrast, the exhibition environment revealedmore deficiencies, particularly in failing to adequately reflect the diverse needs of visitors. Based on these findings, threedirections for improvement are suggested. First, barrier-free environments should go beyond simply meeting legal requirementsand instead consider visitors’ actual convenience, accessibility, and safety. Second, clear installation standards should beestablished to ensure that all visitors can easily access and experience exhibitions, while accommodating diverse physicalcharacteristics. Third, the current BF (Barrier-Free) certification primarily focuses on the physical aspects of buildings, lackingcriteria for exhibition environments. Thus, evaluation standards should be developed to address exhibition layouts, visitorcirculation areas, and information delivery methods, and these should be incorporated into the legal evaluation framework toimprove the accessibility of exhibition spaces in practice. This study is expected to serve as a foundation for the creation andimprovement of barrier-free exhibition environments, enabling exhibition spaces to function as more inclusive cultural spaces.
