Additive-free electrophoretic deposition of MAPbX₃ perovskite electrodes for halide-dependent lithium storage

Hybrid lead halide perovskites are promising multifunctional materials, yet their use as lithium-ion battery electrodes remains limited. Herein, methylammonium lead bromide (MAPbBr₃) and methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI₃) electrodes were directly fabricated by additive-free electrophoretic deposition (EPD). This electrode configuration eliminates conductive carbon, polymer binder, and slurry-derived interfacial artifacts, enabling a more direct comparison of halide-dependent lithium-storage behavior. Structural and morphological analyses confirmed the formation of crystalline, particulate perovskite films on Cu current collectors. In Li half-cells, the MAPbBr₃ electrode exhibited higher capacity and more sustained redox features than the MAPbI₃ electrode. The improved electrochemical response of MAPbBr₃ is attributed to the better retention of perovskite-derived active phases during repeated lithiation/delithiation, whereas MAPbI₃ showed rapid capacity decay and poor reversibility. These results demonstrate that additive-free EPD provides a useful platform for directly evaluating hybrid perovskite electrodes and highlights bromide-based MAPbBr₃ as a more favorable halide perovskite for Li-storage applications. © 2026
