Silver nanoparticle based chemochromic sensor for hydrogen sulfide detection

Silver nanoparticles are promising materials for chemochromic hydrogen sulfide (H2S) sensing due to their strong affinity for thiol (-SH) groups, and their distinctive color change upon exposure. In this study, silver nanoparticles capped with oleic acid were synthesized via a facile solution phase method at 25 degrees C. The resulting nanoparticle film exhibited a clear color transition from dark orange to gray upon exposure to H2S, attributed to ligand substitution and nanoparticle aggregation. A dE (color difference) value of 144 was recorded upon exposure to 500 ppm H2S, and the film demonstrated visible chemochromic responses across a concentration range of 10-500 ppm, detectable by the naked eye. The sensor also showed a selectivity over other gases, including N-2, CO, CO2, CH4, H-2, and NH3. Furthermore, the film maintained robust long-term stability, retaining its sensing performance for over two weeks under ambient conditions.
