Utterance Patterns of Beliefs and Values in Self-Introductory Discourse and Their Educational Implications

초록

This study analyzed the expressions of beliefs and values in university students’ self-introduction speeches and explored the discourse functions these expressions perform and their relationship to the construction of speaker identity. To this end, the study examined utterances in which beliefs and values are directly or indirectly expressed across three dimensions: linguistic form, discourse, and pragmatics. The analysis revealed various patterns of meaning construction through sentence- level expression, discourse organization, and connections with other content elements. In particular, the level of meaning construction and the extent of discourse expansion varied according to the degree to which expressions of beliefs and values were linked to experiences, dispositions, and goals. Furthermore, these patterns also influenced the expression of self-identity, including self-understanding and self-definition. The findings suggest that instruction in self-introduction speaking should shift from focusing on “how to present information about oneself” and “what to say” toward an approach centered on “how to effectively reveal one's identity by connecting, combining, arranging, and reconstructing various content elements around beliefs and values.”
