동화에 의한 재구조화와 비자동적 교체

Assimilation-based Restructuring and Non-automatic Alternation

초록

]The main purpose of this paper is to provide the phonological motivation for a certain phonological anomaly in hiatus resolution and vowel harmony in Korean. The Optimality-theoretic analysis in this paper is crucially based upon the corelation between diachronic assimilation and the restructuring of underlying representation. The basic rationale behind the relation between assimilation and restructuring is that a diachronic phonological process may have an effect on the underlying representational properties of a certain group of stems displaying eccentric phonological behaviors in synchronic phonology. In hiatus-resolving process in Korean, there are interesting cases of vowel deletion which need a more careful observation. A certain set of stems with palatal onsets or labial onsets display obligatory vowel deletion, even though the segmental environment seems to require optional glide formation accompanying compensatory lengthening. A similar phonological anomaly can also be found in vowel harmony in sound symbolism that displays unexpected positional neutrality. Such phonological idiosyncrasy of exceptional stems can be accounted for by positing a linked structure of a feature between the adjacent vowel and consonant, which reflects diachronic stem-internal assimilation and the restructuring of underlying form.
