Circularly-Polarized Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces for Arbitrary Beam Shaping

We hereby propose a circularly-polarized reconfigurable intelligent surface that can synthesize complex far-field patterns, which would typically require independent amplitude and phase control of the local reflection coefficients.The proposed unit cell is structurally symmetric and includes varactor diodes, allowing circular-polarization operation and continuous local phase manipulation over nearly 300◦, with relatively low loss.By leveraging a genetic algorithm in the synthesis of radiation patterns, we showcase the versatility of the proposed surface through the numerical demonstrations of (i) anomalous reflection and (ii) arbitrary beam splitting. © 2024 IEEE.
