초록

This study explores the potential of Extended Reality (XR) technologies as tools for architectural design, focusing on how XR devices and applications can be integrated into both educational and professional settings. Despite advancements in technology, traditional methods such as CAD and 3D software still dominate architectural design, often limiting the sensory experiences essential to the field. XR technologies, which include Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR), offer new opportunities for immersive and interactive design processes. The research emphasizes the need for systematic analysis and guidelines to effectively incorporate XR tools into architectural practice. By examining existing XR devices and applications, the study creates a matrix that aligns XR capabilities with various stages of the architectural design process, based on the RIBA Plan of Work framework. This matrix serves as a strategic guide for educators and practitioners in selecting and utilizing XR technologies. The study concludes that integrating XR into architectural education and practice could greatly enhance design outcomes and user experiences. However, it also acknowledges current limitations and highlights the necessity for further research to optimize XR's role in architecture. © 2024 Architectural IInstitute of Korea.
