묘두사 설화를 기반으로 한 스토리텔링 가구 디자인 연구

초록

In contemporary design discourse, the reinterpretation of traditional folklore has emerged as a compelling strategy to bridge cultural heritage with everyday life. This study explores the transformation of the Korean folk creature Myodusa—a mythical being with the head of a cat and the body of a snake—into a contemporary art furniture piece. Rooted in a regional legend from Jangdan County, Myodusa is associated with healing and protective symbolism. The project aims to translate these symbolic attributes into tangible, interactive forms using a combination of modern materials such as MDF, steel mesh, PVC, and tufted textiles. The final outcomes include a stool, a lighting fixture, and a rug, all designed to evoke the creature’s narrative qualities while offering functional value. This research highlights how storytelling and design can intersect to produce furniture that not only serves utilitarian purposes but also acts as a medium for cultural expression and emotional resonance. Through this case study, the paper proposes a methodology for integrating regional folklore into contemporary design as a way of preserving intangible cultural assets within physical and experiential formats.
