현대건축의 물리적 공간 확장성 구현 방식과 공간 관계 비교 연구
초록
This study systematically examines the expandability of space in contemporary architecture, with particular attention toits physical manifestations and modes of implementation. Through case studies of representative architects—including ValerioOlgiati, Christian Kerez, Lacaton & Vassal, Aires Mateus, RCR Arquitectes, and Rudy Ricciotti—the common characteristics ofspatial expandability in recent architectural practice are identified as follows. First, spatial expandability is not simply anenlargement of area; rather, it expands both interior and exterior spaces at a physical level through structural reconfigurationand addition of external space with innovative use of materials. Second, it extends space by recalibrating the boundariesbetween interior and exterior through strategies such as patterning, unit formation, and façade articulation. Third, the expansionof interior space is achieved through spatial superposition and intrusion, while the expansion of exterior space manifests ascontinuity, and the transformation of façades and boundaries establishes relationships through the creation of transitional zones. This study underscores the academic significance and practical implications of spatial expandability as a new design paradigmin contemporary architecture, and it suggests that future research should incorporate broader case studies, quantitative analysis, digital technology integration, and sustainability perspectives.
