Proposal for Improving Underground Smart Farm Spaces in Seoul Metro Stations-Focusing on Sangdo, Dapsimni, Cheonwang, Chungjeong-ro, and Euljiro3-ga Station Sangdo-

Underground smart farms have the potential to support the UN Sustainable Development Goals by addressing issues like hunger, sustainable agriculture, water and sanitation, energy, quality jobs, economic growth, innovation, infrastructure, and climate change. The Seoul Metropolitan Government has initiated the creation of vertical smart farms by utilizing unused space in subway stations. These underground projects can enhance urban sustainability by increasing food self-sufficiency in idle underground spaces. However, research on underground smart farming is limited, making this an exploratory study of the design characteristics of the underground smart farm spaces in Korea. This study examines five smart farms operating in unused spaces within Seoul subway stations, incorporating literature and document survey, field studies, stakeholder interviews, and user surveys. Field studies focused on the spatial characteristics of smart farms and their integration within the subway stations. Interviews were conducted with stakeholders from both the public and private sectors. Additionally, surveys were taken from people in and around subway stations to assess awareness of underground smart farms and purchasing experiences. Based on the findings, short-term recommendations for spatial planning related to production, sales, and dining spaces were proposed. Long-term recommendations suggest improvements for greater sustainability by enhancing spatial connections between smart farms, public facilities and pedestrian areas. The results of this study could be applied not only to other unused spaces in Seoul subway stations, but also in other cities around Korea. © 2024 Architectural Institute of Korea.
