초록
Gwanghwamun Square, in its current state, was created by combining the functions of a square and the symbolic National Street of Sejong-ro, replacing the historic Jujak Daero (Yukjo-geori). The notion of a National Street is one that instills a city image and reinforces a Korean cultural identity. However, Gwanghwamun Square, which can play such a role, is on the verge of change in the face of a new redevelopment plan. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the effectiveness of the plan and to assess its cultural and economic merits along with its symbolic meaning to the nation today. This study then suggests an improved direction for the new plan. Accordingly, this research aims to analyze the current status of Gwanghwamun Square, the appropriateness and symbolic meaning of the proposed changes, and what value the new plan can contribute to the city. For this study, an analysis is made based on Relph's theory of place identity, which defines the basic components for an understanding of place. This study concludes that the plan is generally suitable as a way to improve upon current conditions. Analysis showed that the new plan can contribute economic value to the current status. Further directions were suggested for two additional points that were deemed to be lacking.
