초록

This study reinterprets the structural and aesthetic principles of traditional Korean wooden roof architecture, focusing on the curvilinear system of the paljak (hip-and-gable) roof. The roof’s form embodies the harmony of structure and line, where the interaction between the anheorikok (inner waist curve), angkok (outer upward curve), and seonja-yeon (fan-shaped rafters) creates a rhythmic balance between stability and ascension. These curvilinear principles were transformed into a contemporary desk design, in which the traditional downward load flow was inverted to form an upward-expanding structure. Three fabrication methods—bent lamination, steam bending, and CNC 3D milling—were applied to reconstruct the roof’s dynamic curvature through modern materials and processes. The results reveal that the Korean roof’s curvature system is not a decorative motif but a form-generating structural logic adaptable to modern design. By translating architectural order into spatial rhythm, this research proposes a methodology that converts the order of load into the ascension of form, demonstrating how Korean architectural aesthetics can evolve through contemporary craftsmanship.
