민주시민교육의 쟁점과 과제

초록

Amid growing policy and public interest in the topic of democratic citizenship education, this study presents its key issues and tasks across three dimensions. First, regarding its concept and direction, democratic citizenship education must uphold the purpose of “education for sovereign citizens” and nurture those citizens who act as agents in public decision-making. Second, its diverse thematic content should center on public decision-making, while teaching methods must emphasize inquiry, deliberation, and practice that encourage students to have experiences with the democratic system. Third, it requires institutional conditions that enable teachers to address public issues, alongside efforts to foster a democratic school climate in ways that do not place undue burdens on responsible educators.
