Problems and Alternatives of the Dutch Hangeulization System

초록

This study discusses problems of the current Dutch Hangeulization System and provides its alternative version by correcting errors and providing a supplementary information. Scrutiny of the structure and contents of the Dutch Hangeulization System poses problems in hangeulizing Dutch fricatives, vowels represented by a singleton e and a geminate ee, and diphthongs represented by various letter combinations. v and z are written as ‘프/ㅍ’ and ‘스/ㅅ’ to reflect the Northern Standard Dutch pronunciation. The long vowel /e:/ represented either by ee or e in a free stressed syllable is consistently written as ‘에이,’ the reduced vowel /ə/ in an unstressed syllable as ‘어,’ and /ɛ/ in a checked syllable as ‘에.’ The diphthongs /ɛi̯, œy̯, ɔu̯/ are uniformly written as '아이, 아위, 아우' by reflecting the Northern Standard Dutch pronunciation in which the syllable nuclei of the diphthongs are lowered to low vowels. This study is significant in that it compares the current Dutch Hangeulization System and its revised version that accommodates correction and supplement.
