A Cross-Language Study of the Micro-Temporal Characteristics of Coronal Obstruents in Utterance Initial CV Sequences: English, Korean, and Hindi

초록

This study investigates the micro-temporal characteristics of English, Korean, and Hindi coronal obstruents in utterance-initial CV sequences. VOT and durations of the sub-segments in utterance-initial CV sequences, that is, frication noise, aspiration, and the voiced part of the vowel, were measured to examine the temporal characteristics of each sub-segment and their temporal structure. The results showed a gradual difference in VOT and frication noise across manners of articulation in English and Hindi, a gradual difference in aspiration and the voiced part of the vowel across phonation types in Korean, and a clear temporal compensation between aspiration and the voiced part of the vowel with the sum of them constant for a whole sample composed of stops, affricates, and fricatives.
