Aggressive driving in ride-hailing: Work hours and road conditions

As ride-hailing services continue to expand rapidly in urban areas, growing concerns have emerged regarding traffic safety. Among various risk factors, aggressive driving is considered one of the most significant contributors to road crashes. This study aims to explore the impact of driving hours and road attributes on urban driving behaviour. Taxi trajectory data and road network data were utilised to examine nine types of aggressive driving behaviour: speeding, acceleration, sudden starts, deceleration, sudden stops, lane changing, overtaking, turning, and U-turning. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox proportional hazards modelling were employed to identify the effects of driving hours and road attributes on these behaviours. The results of the Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that the occurrence of aggressive driving behaviours increased steadily over time, with the hazard probability reaching 8.2% after prolonged driving (8 h). The Cox proportional hazards analysis showed that sudden starts, acceleration, and lane changes were more significantly associated with aggressive driving behaviours. Regarding road attributes, features such as roadway curvature and speed limits were found to have a substantial influence on the likelihood of aggressive driving. These findings suggest that both individual driving behaviours and road environment characteristics play critical roles in shaping risk patterns.
