Research on the Head Appearance Design of Companion Robots for Preschool Children Based on Emotional Cognition Theory

Background: The head design of companion robots plays a crucial role in shaping children's emotional cognition, sense of attachment, and overall user experience. Methods: This study extracts visual imagery factors from the facial design of companion robots to propose a design method based on emotional cognition, aimed at optimizing children's visual experiences and enhancing their psychological enjoyment during interaction. Results: Analysis of stroller sample images and descriptive adjectives reveals a gender-based preference, with boys favoring realistic head designs and girls preferring cartoon-like features. A quantitative analysis of experimental data identifies five key visual imagery factors: "cute," "friendly," "gentle," "warm," and "lively." Further perceptual evaluation, combined with factor analysis, isolates two primary factors: "friendly" and "gentle." Conclusion: Children's preferences for companion robot head designs show significant gender differences. The facial features of robots, particularly those conveying "friendliness" and "gentleness," are core determinants of emotional cognition. By employing rounded contours, smooth lines, and expressive facial features, designers can enhance children's acceptance and attachment, ultimately optimizing interaction experiences. The findings provide theoretical support for the design of companion robots and lay a foundation for future product development and optimization.
