A Study of Color Representation in Researcher’s Works through Comparison with Abstract Expressionist Artists Georgia O’Keeffe and Choi Wook-Kyung

초록

The purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics of emotional color expression in Abstract Expressionism, with a focus on further developing the researcher's own work. The study first analyzed the core themes in the artworks of Georgia O'Keeffe and Choi Wook-kyung, examining how they employed abstract forms and colors. This comparative analysis was conducted due to their recognition both nationally and internationally, as well as their shared inspiration from nature and use of gradation coloring. Following this, emotional color expression was analyzed using the I.R.I image scale and gradation color bands. Based on this analysis, three common characteristics were identified in the works of O'Keeffe and Choi: the use of natural elements to convey personal psychology or experiences, the prioritization of color as the primary means of emotional expression, and the effective use of gradation coloring. However, differences were noted based on the individual themes pursued by each artist, particularly in the modulation of gradation color expression. This study confirms the correlation between the researcher's work and those of female Abstract Expressionists, analyzing the significance of color from various perspectives. The focus lies in deeply understanding how subjective color expressions function in conveying personal experiences and emotions. Subsequent research is expected to play a pivotal role in the future development of the researcher's work.
