Behavior of RC Beams Strengthened with CFRP Sheets Exposed to Low Temperature

Concrete structures are damaged due to higher load than the design load, environmental effects, and corrosion of reinforcement, etc. The technique of externally strengthening Reinforced Concrete with FRP is one of the most widely used reinforcing techniques. In addition, the number of structures exposed to low temperature environments for long periods of time is increasing due to technological advancement and resource development. It is generally known that low temperature changes the mechanical properties of materials used in reinforced concrete. Therefore, this study evaluated the behavior of CFRP strengthening RC beams exposed to low temperature through experiments. The experimental variables were the strength of the concrete and the exposure temperature. The strength of the concrete was normal strength and high strength concrete, and the experiment was conducted at 20 ℃, -20 ℃, and -60 ℃. The four-point bending method was used to test the flexural performance of the RC beams. The experimental results estimated that the strength of RC beam increased as the temperature decreased. However, as the temperature decreased, the performance of CFRP deterio- rated, and problems such as CFRP delamination and reduced ductility occurred. © fédération internationale du béton (fib).
