Parental Self-Efficacy Among Multicultural Family Mothers: Understanding its Sources and Role

초록

This study aimed to advance our understanding of parental self-efficacy among mothers from multicultural families. Specifically, we examined whether parental self-efficacy predicted communication with children, children's school adaptation, and school involvement. Additionally, Korean language proficiency, marital relationship satisfaction, and acculturative stress were investigated as sources of parental self-efficacy, and parental self-efficacy was tested as a mediator. Survey responses from 2,249 households in the first (2019) and second (2020) waves of the Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study (MAPS) were analyzed. Path analysis results indicated that parental self-efficacy predicted communication with children, children's school adaptation, and school involvement. Korean language proficiency, marital relationship satisfaction, and acculturative stress significantly predicted parental self-efficacy and also indirectly predicted communication with children, children's school adaptation, and school involvement via parental self-efficacy. Based on the results, theoretical implications regarding the sources and role of parental self-efficacy among multicultural mothers are derived, and policy and practical support for improving parental self-efficacy are discussed.
