Quantitative evaluation of urban flooding originating from multiple sources using flood risk indices

Global warming has accelerated in recent years, resulting in high-intensity typhoons and torrential rains that lead to loss of life and property damage. These events greatly increase the likelihood of flooding in coastal cities, and the risk of complex flooding in which river inundation, inland flooding and storm surge occur concurrently is also increasing. However, the flood hazard areas currently marked on flood maps do not coincide with the actual flooding zone after a typhoon, and they show an unsatisfactory performance in complex flood situations. This impedes establishment of flood protection strategies that consider the effect of complex flooding. In this study, flood analyses that compared single and multiple flooding source(s) were implemented targeting the Masan Free Trade Zone located on the south coast of South Korea. For single source simulations, the maximum values from river inundation, inland flooding and storm surges were selected. In contrast, the multiple source simulation was conducted by considering all the flooding mechanism at the same time. The two results were compared by introducing two flood indexes: Flood Intensity (FI) and Flood Hazard Rating (FHR).
