초록
into a traditional Korean form through its integration with Korea's unique naturalistic worldview. Field surveys, literature analysis, and iconographic comparison were conducted using lion depictions found on stone pagodas, celadon, Buddhist ritual objects, and everyday crafts from the Three Kingdoms period through the late Joseon Dynasty. The analysis reveals that the realistic and menacing beast imagery of the early reception period was gradually restructured into a distinctly Korean visual language through the peninsula's mild climate and naturalistic thought. The four-stage framework of formative, prototypical, standardized, and late periods explains how foreign lion iconography evolved from a subordinate pagoda element into an autonomous guardian icon. Throughout this process, the lion shed its fierce foreign form, acquiring rounded volume and humorous expression, as seen in Joseon-era Buddhist objects such as upgyeongdae and sumidan. Uncovering the Korean naturalism embedded within this iconography is not a mere enumeration of art-historical styles. Just as Western classics serve as creative resources for the modern content industry, this native icon stands as a compelling source of inspiration for today's creators. This study is an empirical record reclaiming the identity of a forgotten traditional icon and establishing a foundation for expanding its formal principles into modern illustration and character design.
