Development and Application of Mathematical Model-Based Materials for Out-of-School Youth

초록

This case study developed mathematical model-based learning materials in real-life contexts for out-of-school youth and explored participants' affective characteristics in mathematics and their pre-post response patterns. A 160-minute program was organized around infectious disease spread and artificial intelligence prediction, drawing on external expert reviews of the original infectious disease materials. The infectious disease activity comprised a three-level hierarchy of formalization, from arithmetic calculation through recurrence relations and geometric sequences to a discrete SIR model. The materials were implemented with 18 adolescents at a youth support center, with a 20-item affective instrument administered before and after. First, an arithmetic entry task was extended to recurrence relations and a discrete SIR model while retaining the same infectious disease situation. Second, the pre-program responses showed relatively higher means for value/usefulness and interest and a lower mean for confidence/efficacy. Third, among the 18 adolescents who voluntarily participated, the mean score across items 1–18 was 3.79 before the program and 4.01 on the following day. This study presents the design and implementation of mathematical model-based materials for out-of-school youth and explores the participants’ affective characteristics and response patterns before and after the program.
