A grid-based collaboratory for civil engineering experiment

We present a grid-based Civil Engineering Collaboratory (CEC) in which civil engineers can perform their research regardless of geographical location. CEC enables researchers to conduct a remote experiment as well as to interact with colleagues at a distance over the Internet. The result data from the experiments can be recorded and shared among researchers through search and replay capabilities. CEC aims to support a collaboratory including dozens of large-scale civil-engineering facilities in Korea Construction Engineering Development (KOCED) project. One of these civil-engineering facilities is a hybrid test facility involving experimental nodes and numerical simulation nodes geographically apart. In this paper, we present the architecture of a collaboratory in which civil-engineering researchers perform hybrid test, share the result, and interact with one another. We hope our CEC will be helpful in building collaboratories in other scientific fields. © 2008 IEEE.
