Ferdinand Ries in London

This article examines Ferdinand Ries's activities in London (1813-1824) based on contemporary sources. The aim is to explore his position along with the reception of his works and to clarify the circumstances that led to his rapid rise and fall. Upon his arrival in London, Ries associated himself with the Philharmonic Society, dealt with its programming, and acted as a civic liaison. With the help of Johann Peter Salomon and other acquaintances, he quickly gained prominance as a composer and performer. However, starting around 1818, his popularity in London rapidly declined, driven not only by increasingly nationalistic undertones in the court of public opinion concerning music, but also by the ongoing process of the canonization of Beethoven's works.
