Narrative Patterns in Self-Introduction Discourse for Relationship Formation - Focusing on Gender Differences

초록

This study examines how individual identity is narratively constructed in self-introduction discourse at the initial stage of heterosexual relationship formation, with a focus on gender differences. The data consist of 23 self-introductions (13 men and 10 women) excerpted from the Korean reality dating program “I Am SOLO.” Using a coding frame centered on actors, experiences and events, and time and space, the study analyzes the narrative patterns of the discourse. The findings indicate that self-introduction serves not simply as an exchange of personal information, but as an audience-oriented identity construction aimed at increasing interpersonal attractiveness. The men more often produced biographical narratives linking the past, present, and future through competence, occupational achievement, and personal growth. By contrast, the women tended to use episodic narratives emphasizing relational orientation, emotional appeal, and friendliness. These results suggest that such narratives are shaped by socially gendered expectations of desirable qualities.
