Korea's FTA Policy and the Contribution to the Development of Regional Trade Agreements

Since the Korea–Chile FTA became effective on April 1, 2004, Korea has established 22 FTAs with 59 countries, creating a comprehensive trade network essential for managing external trade uncertainties and risks. Korea’s FTA achievements encompass expanded trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges that have strengthened economic cooperation with partner countries. Additionally, Korea has successfully reduced the risk of disputes with partners through FTA implementation mechanisms, contributed to the creation of new trade norms, and established economic cooperation frameworks with developing nations. Having achieved remarkable success, Korea now confronts the need to transform its trade strategy in response to the evolving global dynamics. This requires modernizing existing agreements, strategically pursuing new partnerships, and developing innovative negotiation frameworks that transcend traditional FTA paradigms.
