Reinterpretation of Vowel Space

초록

The vowel space is a window to speech perception. One aspect of speech perception can be understood through the vowel space. The vowel space provides the most important spectral information of the speech sounds. This study interprets vowel space as a huge structure created by accumulating speech information constantly coming through the ears, where vowel phonemes emerge as the peaks. Vowel space is a fossilized heritage of speech sounds, which is constantly being updated. This study attempts to reinterpret vowel space. In so doing, this study reviews formant measurement algorithms and settings, characteristics of speech data to be analyzed, and boundaries of vowel space.
