A Case Study on Public Cultural Facilities in Urban Redevelopment Areas as Third Place : Focusing on Sagajeong Majung Maeul Hwallyeogso

초록

This study analyzes the role of public cultural facilities as spaces that restore or complement urban communities weakened after redevelopment, focusing on third place theory. The case is Sajeong Majung Maeul Hwalryeokso in Jungnang-gu, Seoul, and the study employed literature analysis, field observation, and directed content analysis based on in-depth interviews. The findings show that the facility enables everyday access and stay through its location within a residential life sphere, open spatial structure, and autonomous use. Unlike ordinary living culture facilities, users tended to remain in the space regardless of program participation, while resident-led activities activated interactions among users. These findings indicate that weakened community ties are being restored or reconstructed, and that repeated use of the multifunctional space forms familiarity, emotional affinity, and placeness. This study suggests that public cultural facilities in redevelopment areas can function as third places that restore diminished community ties and locality when they support residents’ autonomous use and participation.
