This work introduces a freestanding montmorillonite (MMT) clay-based separator as a scalable, cost-effective strategy to address dendritic growth in lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Fabricated via a slurry-based process, the MMT separator combines intrinsic lithiophilicity, thermal stability, mechanical integrity, and enhanced ionic conductivity to enable uniform lithium deposition and suppress dendrite formation. Demonstrating over 2000 stable cycles without short-circuiting, this separator markedly improves cycling performance and safety, offering a promising route to extend the longevity and thermal stability of LMBs and next-generation metal anode batteries.
