A Study on the Public Place Experience Formed by (Un)Finished Architecture

초록

(Background and Purpose) Architecture has generally been understood as a physical outcome completed through the processes of design and construction. However, its meaning and value continue to evolve and take shape after completion through use, the accumulation of time, and user participation. Accordingly, this study defines architecture that continues to be renewed after completion through the passage of time and user participation as‘(Un)Finished Architecture’, establishes analytical categories for its public place experience, and examines the applicability of these categories through case analysis. (Method) Based on a theoretical review of architectural completion and post-occupancy, this study proposed the concept of‘(Un)Finished Architecture’and its analytical categories. A scoping review following the PRISMA-ScR procedure and thematic analysis were subsequently conducted on Korean and international literature published from 2021 to 2026. Through this process, five analytical categories—narrativity, temporality, participation, placeness, and publicness—were established. An analytical framework for the case studies was then developed by specifying the operational definitions, observation indicators, data sources, and rating criteria for each category. The framework was applied to five public spaces regenerated from disused industrial and transportation infrastructure for comparative analysis. The cases were selected according to four criteria: typological relevance, accumulation of time, evidence of participation, and data accessibility. Regeneration strategies, including the preservation of original structures, partial modification and extension, and comprehensive remodeling or reconstruction, were examined together with the characteristics of the five analytical categories. (Results) The literature analysis showed that placeness was identified in all 10 studies, participation and publicness in four studies each, and narrativity and temporality in three studies each. In the case analysis, temporality was consistently identified across all five cases, while differences in modes of participation tended to be associated with the formation of placeness and publicness. Placeness was also found to be related not only to modes of participation but also to the extent to which the original physical structures were preserved. A comparative examination of the cases further showed that, while the accumulation of time was a common characteristic, the formation of place experience varied according to modes of participation and the degree of physical preservation. These findings suggest that the public value of architecture is not fixed at the point of completion but continues to develop through place experiences accumulated during its subsequent use. (Conclusions) This study proposed the concept and analytical categories of‘(Un)Finished Architecture’as an integrated framework for interpreting temporality, participation, and place experience after architectural completion, and examined their explanatory potential by applying them to actual cases. In doing so, the study interprets architectural completion not as a fixed outcome but as an ongoing process of place formation and provides a perspective for understanding the public value of architecture that emerges and evolves after completion.
