창원시 빅트리 공공조형물의 공간 경험 분석에 관한 연구

초록

This study aims to analyze the Big Tree public sculpture in Changwon from a public design perspective, moving beyond the simplistic binary judgment of its social controversy as either a success or failure. Specifically, while critical discourse formed around media coverage serves as the starting point of the study, it is not used as a direct evaluative measure; instead, it is reinterpreted in conjunction with an analysis of spatial experience. The research methodology involved reviewing prior domestic studies on public sculptures and public design to establish analytical criteria and developing a conceptual framework of the “intentionally accessible symbolic facility.” Using this framework, Namsan Seoul Tower was employed as a comparative case, and field surveys and spatial experience analyses were conducted on the Big Tree in Changwon. The results reveal that, despite being located within an urban park, the Big Tree exhibits limited connectivity with everyday urban pathways and demonstrates insufficient accumulation of spatial experience during the approach and post-arrival phases. This study highlights how such limitations in spatial experience interact with media framing, thereby stabilizing and reinforcing citizen perceptions. The findings suggest that future public sculpture projects should consider both the spatial experience structure and perception design in tandem.
