Application of steel plate-concrete composite wall to satisfy the wall shear strength requirements in high-rise buildings

This study proposes a steel plate insertion method to enhance the shear strength of composite shear walls without increasing wall thickness. Two types of insertion methods, monolithic and separated, were examined using studs, bolts, and stiffeners to ensure composite action. Nine specimens were tested, including five for shear strength verification and four for overall structural behavior. The results confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed method in improving shear strength, though performance varied depending on the degree of composite action between steel and concrete. For reliable application, stud spacing should be limited to 300 mm or less with strict quality control, and the shear strength of monolithic walls is recommended to be calculated using Method 3 of KDS 14 31 80 (2024). Cyclic loading tests further showed that steel plate insertion did not significantly affect flexural strength, deformation capacity, or failure mode, as the applied shear force was only about 1/50 of the nominal shear strength. © 2026 The Author(s).
