The transformative role of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) and Mixed Reality (MR) for immersive experiences: a survey

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping how we make, interact with, and experience digital content. Generative AI (GenAI) draws on advanced machine learning to create varied content from input data or user prompts, while Mixed Reality (MR) closes the gap between physical and digital worlds, letting people engage with real and virtual objects in seamless, immersive environments. Pairing the two couples GenAI’s creative range with MR’s immersion, enriching Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) experiences. This article examines how their convergence reshapes applications in Art Design, Education, Religion, Entertainment, and Psychology/Human Behaviour. We build ontological models for each technology, identify key integration points, and validate them through six museum implementations exemplifying distinct GenAI-MR approaches. © 2026 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
