발레리오 올지아티의 비참조적 건축에 관한 연구

초록

The purpose of this study is to clarify the concept and meaning of the Non-Referential Architecture of Valerio Olgiati. Considering his crucial influences on contemporary architecture, his enigmatic position requests academic interpretations. In order to decipher his architecture, an idea of the Non-Referential World, Olgiati’s perspective on today, is defined and differences from the existing design approaches are analyzed from various books and interviews. Furthermore, principles of the Non-Referential Architecture are distilled and their application to the design process, building’s physicality, and beholder’s experience and perception are studied to elucidate the Non-Referential Architecture. Facing the ever-increasing metaphysical homelessness, architecture is required to make each person constantly align oneself with the world anew in an existential way. Non-Referential Architecture is about inventing new architecture with fundamental architectonic elements so as to provide sense-making experience that inspires imagination and thinking. Architectural elements structured interdependently and organically based on contradictions originated from the architectural idea encourage metaphysical experience. One idea that generates the logic of ordering systems should be precisely constructed with one material that reinforces the idea. Becoming an irreplaceable creative ‘author-architect’ is the only breakthrough in today’s Non-Referential World.
