Calculation of Hydrodynamic Forces on Floating Offshore Wind Turbine Substructure Using Modified Morison's Equation

Calculating the hydrodynamic force acting on a floating platform is essential to assess its dynamic behavior. Traditionally, such analyses for floating offshore oil and gas platforms have involved three-dimensional diffraction/radiation potential analysis to derive added mass coefficients, radiation damping coefficients, and wave exciting force coefficients in the frequency domain. These coefficients are then used to compute the dynamic response in the time domain, and the same procedure is typically applied to floating offshore wind turbine substructures. However, when the shape or dimensions of a floating platform change during the early design stage, the potential analysis must be repeated each time, which can delay the design process. This study investigates the use of a modified Morison's equation as a more efficient method to approximate the hydrodynamic force on a substructure without requiring potential analysis in the early design phase of floating offshore wind turbines. A procedure is proposed for determining the added mass coefficients and the Morison's equation correction that minimizes the errors relative to the results of potential analysis. To validate the proposed method, the dynamic response of a 15 MW floating offshore wind turbine was calculated using the modified Morison's equation. The results of this study demonstrate that applying the modified Morison's equation can predict wave loads at a level similar to that of diffraction/radiation potential analysis, which allows rapid estimation of the dynamic behavior of the floater in the early design stage.
