Morphology and Semantics of Neologisms Related to ‘Tem’

초록

Neologisms related to ‘Tem’, which first appeared after the 2000s, were initially used as game-related terminology. However, they have gradually expanded their domain and are now actively used with general meanings. These neologisms manifest in various structural forms, such as simplex words, replacements, derivatives, blends, and compounds, demonstrating a robust word-formation productivity that extends even to the phrasal and sentential levels. Semantically, some words are generated with meanings similar to existing vocabulary, such as saengpil-tem and dokseo-tem. Others exhibit semantic redundancy, such as gagu-tem and ramyeon-tem, or synonymous tautology, such as goods-tem and yongpum-tem. Furthermore, neologisms reflecting evaluations or attributes of an object that could not be expressed by the conventional word yongpum are also generated, such as seonggong-tem and pink-tem. The creation of these words is a prime example showing the originality of ‘Tem’-related neologisms. Ultimately, the active generation of these neologisms is closely linked to the intuitive nature and semantic clarity of these lexical items.
