초록

This paper aims to define the key characteristics of current Korean automobiles and automotive industry by exploring the differentiating factors that distinguish them, while observing the exterior and interior designs of passenger cars and analyzing reverse-engineered package layouts of the 14 cars manufactured by Korean automotive companies during the 1970s. The analysis results revealed that all passenger cars manufactured by Korean companies in the 1970s were sedan-based types, albeit the original licensing models were diverse, including sedans, coupes, station wagons, and pickups. Unlike in other countries, most Korean homes had large-family households at the time, which led to a strong demand for four-door sedans regardless of car segmentation. This sedan preference has persisted into the present day, taking priority over cabin space usability designs in today’s Korean passenger cars.
