A Study on Visual Effects of Color Gradation - Focused on Value Contrast Effect

초록

This study explores attributes and visual effects of color gradation, which is broadly used in color design of digital contents such as web or mobile services. Theories and practices of color harmony is mainly studied in condition of solid color compositions, and color gradation is not dealt with an independent case of color composition. As a primary experiment, this study controlled various set of values(brightness) of the gradation samples to compare value contrast effect of color gradations. Then 30 participants answered which sample looks brighter, or bigger via online questionnaire form. The answers are statistically analysed. With 14 value interaction experiments of sample gradations, I found four meaningful insights, first, clearness of gradation boundary was the most important attributes on size effects of gradation. Second, comparative value of base color and gradation was the next influential attribute of color gradation on size effects. Third, the direction of value progression of gradation gives size effects of gradation. Lastly, the size effect is more sensitive rather than brightness effect according to gradation attributes. The experiments’ results prioritize gradation attributes for value contrast effect when a designer apply gradation colors on color composition. As a further study, more practice based experiments should prove characters and guides for compositions of color gradation. And gradation making services could be developed to enhance color harmony effects based on this study results.
